QUESTION? How do you become a Sports Chaplain?
The most common way a chaplain is appointed is by way of recommendation by a current serving chaplain. Increasingly common is the invitation by sports administrators of ministers or ex-athletes with whom they have personal or professional relationships.

If you are looking to cut into sports chaplaincy from start, try building some relationships with officials. Get involved with your old club, start getting involved on a practical level, like a property steward, trainer, massuer, etc.

Most national sports chaplaincy organisation have a minimum ministry requirement. Find out as much as you can before making official contact with your club.

QUESTION? I have the opportunity to become the Chaplain of my local sports organisation. Where to now?
The invitation or acceptance to be a club chaplain is a tremendous privilege. Some essential steps to take include, Contact
SCA Australia or the National Sports Chaplaincy Organisation within your country notifying them of your placement or pending placement. Usually these organisations have strong network connections within sports bodies and can provide a number of benefits, like, providing you with a contact list of other chaplains in your sporting field (excuse the pun). Discuss with them the particulars and needs of your sport and it's athletes. Your overseeing body will also provide you with documentation and a code of ethics when dealing with athletes.

Once you have done this meet up with the sports manager / coach / administrator of the club and get a feel for what they expect your role to be - and outline your capabilities and offerings. Most organisations are different and require a flexible approach - so don't try to change the world too soon. Take it easy, get to know your athletes and administrators and your role will become increasingly defined. Remember, you are a guest of the club.

QUESTION? Where can I get more information on chaplaincy?
