  • The sport and rec. sector produced $11,888 million of output in 93/94

  • 32.4% of the population participated in sport in 1997

  • Aerobics was the most popular organised sport for Australian adults, followed by Golf, Tennis, Netball and Lawn Bowls in a 96/97 survey.

  • Over 61% of 5-14 year olds played sport during 96/97

  • Swimming, Basketball, Netball, and Soccer (ranked in order) were the most popular sports with children during 96/97

  • Australian households spent $5,900 million on sport and recreation in 93/94

  • Approximately 830,000 volunteers contributed 105 million hours to sport and recreation in 94/95

  • In addition, recent national research concluded:
    • 96% of Australians watch sport on TV
    • 70% watch football on TV each week
    • 60% attend sporting fixtures
