Biggest Christian Sports Event Eryn Condron

On the Queens Birthday weekend more than 2000 young people from all over Victoria gathered at Lardner Park in Warragul for the biggest Christian sporting event in Australia. State Youth Games 2003 came to life with an opening ceremony filled with colorful displays of pompoms, cheerleaders, dancing and music. Months of preparation and planning ensured that those in attendance were pumped for a massive weekend - and they were definitely not disappointed!

For those unfamiliar with the concept of SYG, it is an event run by Youth Vision, the youth ministry arm of Churches of Christ in Victoria. SYG aims at bringing youth groups from around Victoria together in a positive and friendly environment where they can participate in a variety of sporting activities and build meaningful relationships with others.

Every sporting venue around the Warragul and Drouin area was used to accommodate up to 25 different sports including aerobics, mountain biking, pool volleyball, badminton and basketball.

Once again, Blackburn Community Church of Christ took home the overall winner's trophy, but not without some feisty competition from over 50 other churches. York Street Church of Christ took out the medium Church category, while Sale Baptist triumphed in the small Church category.

The nightly worship rallies were, once again, a highlight of the weekend. On the Saturday night, the SYG worship band had the packed pavilion on their feet before four young people took to the stage and shared briefly on what being a Christian meant to them. A musical drama was also incorporated into the night, with the theme of "How to make a positive statement on the world". On the Sunday night, speaker Matt Fielder, from Paradise Church of Christ in South Australia, provided a challenging message encouraging a huge response which has led to a number of commitments.

The general consensus seems to be that SYG 2003 was a huge success. "Apart from being the coldest State Youth Games I have ever been to, it was definitely the best one!", said Brendan Deith, Boronia Church of Christ.
