Lindquist Challenges Triathletes Focus Grant Willson
© 2002
March, 2002

The inaugural Christian Triathletes breakfast was held at the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra on the weekend of the 16-17th February.

The breakfast was attended by about 25 athletes and their friends, a number of whom were competing in the events on that weekend as part of the Accenture triathlon series. Whilst consuming generous helpings of carbohydrates the group was treated to an interview with Barb Lindquist and a talk by Craig Parkinson.

Barb Lindquist is a triathlete from the USA who is currently leading the Accenture series for elite women. Barb feels that one of the main reasons for her rise in triathlon is a desire to train smart and work on her areas of weakness. Barb also shared that since becoming a Christian her athletic performance is no longer her primary source of self worth but rather this is based on her relationship with Christ.

Craig Parkinson's talk in many ways picked up a similar theme. He spoke about his teenage daughter Rachel and her battle with leukemia. When faced with what eventually proved to be a fatal illness it was amazing to hear of Rachel's faith. This was clearly illustrated when she was invited to do "anything she wanted" on the weekend before her chemotherapy treatment. She chose to publicly show her priorities and trust in God by being baptised. Rachel's legacy is a challenge to all of us to trust in Christ for the future. A common theme from both speakers was that the events of life are sometimes far from what we would like, but it is through these that we can grow as Christians and our faith is often deepened.

Thanks go to Tim Baxter and Peter Nelson for their organisation of the event.
