Recently retired champion jockey Darren Beadman, to become a Christian Minister, initiated his Racing Chaplaincy Ministry by attending the sports chaplains training conference at the Otford Conference Centre in Sydney's Royal National Park.
Dr Mark Tronson, the Australian Cricket Board chaplain for the past 15 years and National Director of Specialised Life-Orientated Ministries Inc (SLM) - the Australian Churches Ministry that has placed over 150 sports chaplains in Australian professional sport - refers to Beadman's decision as a "milestone".
"Darren Beadman's decision to give back to his Sport himself in Christian Ministry is a milestone as it provides a very public model for others," he said.
Dr Tronson points out that Beadman is not the first; (the Reverend) Stuart Gyngell, the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games shot putt bronze medallist, is now one of two Australian Track and Field chaplains.
"Jesus Christ's death, resurrection and Salvation is at the centre of all Christian Ministry training, and sports chaplaincy is ministering to a specialised group of people. The American Racing Chaplaincy experience illustrates that the Racing Chaplain is the one person who is concerned for the people in the industry rather than the horses' welfare," Dr Tronson explained.
